Customizable Workflow Options
Every film pipeline is different, and with Autodesk’s wide range of interoperable, scriptable, modular, and scalable solutions, you have the flexibility to build out a complete production and post environment that suits your unique needs. In today’s increasingly complex environment, every part of the process needs to work together, and the Autodesk end-to-end range of products allows you to build the toolset around your workflow.

Character Design, Storyboarding, and Previz
Pre-visualization is an integral component of today’s film production pipelines, as a way of both communicating creative vision and saving on unnecessary production costs through better planning. Autodesk® MotionBuilder® software offers real-time character animation capabilities and a tight integration with both Autodesk® Maya® and Autodesk® 3ds Max® software in case you want to reuse your assets. Additionally, with Autodesk® Mudbox™ software you can sculpt your characters with complete freedom.

3D Content Creation
With an array of industry-leading solutions to choose from, including Maya, 3ds Max, and Mudbox software, Autodesk offers all the tools needed for your 3D production needs. And, with highly scriptable solutions and application programming interfaces (APIs) available, you can easily integrate our solutions into your pipeline.

3D Compositing for CG and Live-Action
Computer-generated images are ubiquitous in film today; the most advanced HDRI post tools allow you to seamlessly integrate CG footage with live action. Interoperability between Maya and Autodesk® Toxik™ software as well as Autodesk® Flame® systems software allows for easier integration of 2D and 3D elements for any given project.

Autodesk also offers the Autodesk® FBX® file format, the industry standard for interoperability between 3D animation software programs, including 3ds Max, Maya, and Mudbox software.

3D Compositing and Finishing
Access the industry-standard toolset for compositing and finishing with Autodesk Flame, Autodesk® Inferno®, and Autodesk® Smoke® systems software. With Academy Award®-winning technology, Autodesk Inferno, and Autodesk Flame offer a robust 3D compositing environment that has set an industry standard in visual effects. With compatibility of setups between Flame, Inferno and Smoke, you can easily move media from one application to another. Additionally, Autodesk® Wiretap™ functionality allows for increased interoperability between Flame, Toxik, and Maya.

Digital Intermediates
Production-proven Autodesk® Lustre® software provides high-quality, real-time digital color-grading capabilities for today’s data-centric workflows. Collaboration is the key to efficient facility workflow, and Lustre is designed to easily share timelines and media with Autodesk software applications. Source material can be graded in Lustre before, during, or after editing and compositing, and then published to the Smoke or Flame clip library.

Lustre Color Management, an integrated, out-of-the-box solution built on custom-built lookup tables (LUTs), performs highly accurate film print stock emulation for the most common film stocks and colorspace conversions, for output to formats such as the XYZ colorspace 16-bit TIFF files specified by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI).

Sample Workflow: Completing a Film Trailer Using a Concurrent Workflow
Working concurrently gives you more flexibility to complete projects on time in the fast-paced film trailer environment. With all the advantages of a nonlinear, data-centric environment, you can start a project in either the grading or finishing suite and perform highly creative color grades at the beginning, middle, or end of the post process. Meanwhile, create stunning visual effects in Flame software while another artist works on finishing tasks in Smoke software. Metadata is maintained, so projects can move between systems without any loss of data or file setups. This concurrent VFX/grading/finishing workflow provides productivity enhancements and powerful creative advantages for post facilities.

By utilizing a SAN or NAS, multiple Autodesk systems are able to work concurrently to finish a 2K, 10-bit film trailer from a mix of digital scans and HD video sources. Optional support in Flame and Smoke to centralize all media on a shared, standard file system means instant soft-import and publishing of huge data sets, no duplication of image data, and instant passing of entire projects between applications regardless of resolution.

In this workflow, all media is stored as a sequence of standard files and is maintained in a secure and reliable managed library. The SAN provides concurrent, high-bandwidth access to this media from multiple workstations, while the Smoke timeline provides visual tracking of the entire project history—from conform and assembly to grading, finishing, and VFX.

Once all of the RGB image sequences are soft-imported into the managed framestore, Smoke is used for finishing work while Lustre instantly accesses the master timeline pointing to the original (ungraded) scans on the SAN. After grading, Lustre renders new images back to the SAN and sends metadata pointers to Smoke in the form of a timeline that references the new graded media.

Clip compatibility allows Smoke and Flame to share multilayer timelines, simplifying the collaborative process between effects and finishing. Clips can move instantly between applications in a nondestructive workflow that allows setups and effects to be opened and modified regardless of the application in which they were created. Once graded and finished, the master timeline can be opened in Autodesk® Backdraft® Conform software for versioning, output, and archiving.
